  9. I previously used a Compaq Portable (Luggable) PC with two 360K drives
  10. and a 10MB Plus Development HardCard.  Without a carrying case and two
  11. wheeled heavy-duty luggage cart, it was a hassle to maneuver anywhere.

  13. I now have a Zenith laptop (ZFL181-92) with two 720K drives and a very
  14. readable display ... one of its best features!  I've found the 3.5"
  15. micro-disk more durable and easier to transport than the 5.25"; but,
  16. moving data or programs between systems requires some extra effort.
  17.  
  18. Solutions for data transfer include the following:
  19.    - Communications software using a null modem cable between serial ports.
  20.    - External 5.25" disketette drive for the laptop which has connector.
  21.    - Install 3.5" micro-disk drive on desktop system and upgrade MS-DOS to
  22.      Version 3.2 with appropriate CONFIG.SYS driver for the 720KB drive.

  24. The battery only lasts 3-4 hours, so I leave my power supply connected
  25. most of the time when outlets are handy.  It's like having your own
  26. UPS (uninterruptible power supply) during power outage or brownouts.
  27. This has already saved me recover hassles ata least twice this summer.

  29. The color graphics adapter works well but requires some fiddling with
  30. contrast to adjust the shades of blue on off-white for easy reading.
  31. Any software configured for black & white is very legible.

  33. Newer model of same system has a faster CPU than 4.77Mhz and supports
  34. an external 20MB hard disk.  Its keyboard layout with color-coded
  35. function key and lack of separate numeric keypad are inconvenient.

  38. interesting user report under heading of "Notes From 35,000 Feet."
  39. It refers back to a Buyer's Guide, July/87 article on "Portable Computers."
  40. The letter comments on using White Crane, Inc.'s BROOKLYN BRIDGE
  41. communications software for connecting laptops to desktops.

  43. My experience with airport boarding area security checks runs counter to 
  44. that of the reporter.  Passing the laptop unit through the scanner minus
  45. any magnetic media has caused no problems.  However, I've had the contents
  46. of a forgotten diskette in my briefcase completely degausssed.  I'll always
  47. wait for hand-checking diskettes & micro-disks to minimize recovery hassles.
